Specifier Information
At Stancliffe Stone, our project management approach ensures that we are there to work with you from initial design concept, throughout the specification process, to manufacture, and finally to delivery to site. Our team of specialists for each project includes a dedicated specification consultant, an estimator, and internal project manager.
Involving us at an early stage will assist in moving projects forward realistically and effectively, from establishing the suitability of individual stones to questions of availability, finish and fixing.
Working together and sharing with you our understanding of the design, use, and working of dimensional stone, we can help to ensure that you realise your design effectively, economically, and to everyone’s satisfaction.
For specifiers, we can provide further help to specify our stones and products in the following ways:
- Design considerations – our comprehensive guide to specifying dimensional stone.
- CPD Presentations – our Specification Consultants provide RIBA approved CPD Presentations throughout the UK – use the tab below to select your preferred CPD and to submit your booking request.
- NBS – coming soon!
"All our quarries are carefully managed to ensure the optimum yield of block from all of our sites"
Quarrying
Stancliffe specialises in dimensional stone, which is stone processed to specific dimensions. This process is entirely different to aggregate quarrying. Dimensional stone must be treated with respect, with blasting kept to a minimum to ensure the integrity of the quarry block. The majority of the block is dragged out mechanically using a 'claw' tool. All our quarries are carefully managed to ensure the optimum yield of block from all of our sites.
Processing
After the block has been 'primary sawn' it is carefully processed to final product stage. Many of our quarries have processing facilities on site, ensuring quick and efficient processing, and minimising transportation of product prior to final delivery to site. Stancliffe Stone processing capabilities range from hand finished by skilled masons, through to automated cropping and sawing, and the very latest CNC cutting technology.
Lead time/availability
Stancliffe Stone recognises the importance of reliable supply of natural stone to construction projects throughout the British Isles. For this reason we only offer stones which we quarry and process ourselves.
Tight or complex construction programmes are nothing new to Stancliffe Stone, and we are able to advise you at an early stage of current lead-times for specific projects. We also understand that it is not unusual for programmes to change, and if we are actively involved with the project team, we will keep everyone fully briefed on any impact of programme changes to our specific area of involvement in the project.
Colour
Natural variation in colour is a feature of natural stone. Ensuring that the required balance is achieved for the project is our goal, and detailed guidance for specific stones is an essential role of the Stancliffe team.
"At Stancliffe Stone we have a comprehensive understanding of the properties of our stones"
Finishes
At Stancliffe Stone we have a comprehensive understanding of the properties of our stones, and the way in which character and colour can change with texture. We can therefore help to guide you to the best choice of stone and texture for your project. As well as popular, traditional finishes we can produce many other machine and hand tooled finishes for specific projects, or to match existing stonework.
Physical suitability
Up to date descriptions, information on the physical suitability of each of our stones, including test procedures and results, are available from our Technical Team.
As a long established supplier of natural stone, Stancliffe Stone also has a comprehensive database of independent information sources, for further information to assist with designing in stone - access to this database is available upon request.
Design guidance
Our team of specification consultants is able to give guidance on the relevant British Standards appropriate to your specific project.
"It is important to discuss the feasibility of your desired unit sizes with us as early as possible in the design process"
Unit sizes and bed heights
Unit sizes for specific stones can vary according to the quarry, specific stone specification, and project - it is important to discuss the feasibility of your desired unit sizes with us as early as possible in the design process.
CDM
CDM considerations can impact on unit sizes: designers should be aware of the mass of the units, so that appropriate measures can be adopted. Specialist fixing companies will ensure that adequate or special scaffolding and lifting equipment is included in the fixing rates.
Cost management
Consultation with us in the early stages of design can help in cost engineering a project to suit your budget. We have a range of standard architectural masonry components available as well as the ability to produce bespoke units according to your specific design.
Our comprehensive processing facilities, ranging from the automated lines and latest CNC cutting machinery, through to skilled masons for hand finishing, can help to ensure that any further finishing on site, and the associated costs are kept to an absolute minimum.
