Architectural Masonry Range
The Stancliffe Stone Architectural Masonry Range incorporates our most popular architectural components and designs. This standard product range makes the many benefits of natural stone available to construction projects, where bespoke units may previously have resulted in natural stone being cost prohibitive.
The components
This range includes:
- Standard walling units produced in the most popular sizes and textures, available in all Stancliffe Stone options.
- A standard range of architectural masonry components including cills, mullions and jambs, band course, copings and caps, window sets, and heads and feature stones. Designed to complement the standard walling units, bespoke Ashlar work, and brick. All architectural masonry components can be produced in any specific stone from our portfolio, with prices available on application. See our on-line price list for our most popular ranges.

"Standard architectural masonry range"
Designed for ease of use, our standard walling range is available in a range of three sizes and four finishes:
Sizes:
- All the standard formats have both bed and perpend faces sawn.
- The bed dimension is a nominal 100mm.
- All units are of random length.
- Up to three standard course heights are available (depending on the texture selected): 65mm, 140mm, 215mm.
- For details on manufacturing tolerances, see Note 1 below.
- All components are based on a 10mm joint.
Textures
Pitched Face

Historically a method of flattening stone for use in a wide range of buildings, the pitched face has now become the most common finish for use in housing and commercial developments throughout the northern half of the British Isles. Originally produced by hand, it is now produced using the latest technology.
Split Face
A less pronounced, flatter texture than pitched face. The stone is processed through a cropping machine to leave a raw face. Due to the intrinsic nature of the sedimentary rocks, it is common for the stone to split with either a convex or concave face, which can result in some variation of bed width. Where this is inappropriate, further site work of the stone should be specified. Split face is not appropriate for all stone types; for guidance on suitability of a specific stone, talk to us on 01629 653000.
Cottage
Local planning requirements and the increasing difficulty in finding reliable sources of reclaimed material for sensitive locations, can make sourcing natural stone a problem. Cottage walling from Stancliffe can provide the ideal solution: an additional tumbling process after the stone has been cropped creates a stone which has eroded arrises, but still has sawn beds to allow easy construction.
Rubbed Face Walling
A finely dressed and jointed walling style. These blocks are finely finished to give the overall appearance of a bespoke solution.
Note: it is important to always work from 3 to 4 packs in order to gain a blend of colours and lengths.

Walling Dimension Tolerances
A-Length: random
B-Height: +/-5mm
C-Width: -10mm/+15mm Measurements relate to front to rear bed line, and do not take into account any deviation (concave or convex) created when splitting this natural material.
These are intended to be of general use. For project specific information
please contact Stancliffe
Stone direct.
Colour Variation
As a natural product, stone may vary significantly in colour and texture
within a given range. Descriptions and images depicted here concerning
the colour of products are approximate only, and it is strongly recommended
that customers request physical samples of stone available from any range
before placing orders.
Use and Fixing
The Stancliffe Architectural Masonry Range is designed to be built like
brick with a 10 mm joint system. Sandstone blocks may be used in the
same way as brick, block or concrete. The same considerations apply in
the use of wall ties, movement joints, catnic type lintels, wall and
roof restraints, maximum height and length of walls etc., as in any other
type of wall or panel.
Mortar
1 part cement: 1 part lime: 8 to 9 parts sand generally but for specific
advice refer to BS 5628pt3:2005 Mortar joints should be struck off as
the work proceeds, and great care must be taken to avoid smearing faces
with excess mortar. Bucket handle, weathered or vee joints are recommended.

Quality
All stone is processed at our own sites. Individual components are cut
to ± 5 mm on length and depth and ± 5 mm on height, except
for cills which are ± 3mm on all dimensions except length. Walling
stone is of random length and ± 5 mm on course height. Otherwise
dimensions are as described in BSEN 771-6:2005. All orders are shrink-wrapped,
supplied on pallets and quality checked at all stages.
Properties
All physical properties are measured in accordance with the test methods
and requirements of BSEN 771-6 2005.
All our sandstones are made up predominately of silica and have no appreciable
clay content. Their strength ratings, weathering qualities and finished
appearance put them at the top of the quality list of British sandstones.
A list of reference buildings over the past 100 years and more is available
on request.
Manual Handling
Manual Handling Guidelines should be adopted at all times. Stancliffe
Stone Company will provide weight information for all units upon request.
