STONE DESCRIPTION:
Red St. Bees is a dark red sandstone of Permo Triassic age, which forms the sea cliffs of St. Bees Head near Whitehaven in Cumbria. This distinctive closed bedded and fine grained sandstone has proved to be popular choice of building stone for centuries, both in the UK and USA.
In the UK Red St Bees Sandstone has been used from Scotland to the South of England. Its physical performance results in a stone, which is extremely durable and versatile for projects ranging from traditional walling styles through to large scale specification and conservation projects.
PROJECT SUMMARY:
Located on the south western fringe of Rotherham town centre this prestigious new civic building comprising of three contemporary, individual blocks standing 5 -7 storeys high. The development is one of the most significant public sector property transactions outside of London in the last year. Providing a new Library & Arts Centre integrated with a Customer Service Centre on the ground floor, the upper floors servicing Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council staff with a new modern working environment.
THE BUILD SOLUTION:
Traditional materials in conjunction with modern construction methods have been used in building this new civic scheme, bringing a more contemporary palette with it. The three individual blocks standing 5 – 7 storeys high are encapsulated in Red St. Bees sandstone; thin natural sandstone cladding on a metal rainscreen system which is interlinked at one end by a large glazed atrium.
The building achieved a BREEAM energy efficiency rating of ‘Excellent’.
