NATURAL STONE CASE STUDY - NATIONAL FARMERS UNION HQ - WARWICKSHIRE
STONE DESCRIPTION:
A Permian Sandstone from the Locharbriggs Quarry in Dumfries, Scotland, one of the oldest and largest and actively worked red sandstone quarries in Scotland. Quarried since the 18th century, this pink to red medium grained sandstone is widely used across Scotland and England for walling and traditional and contemporary cladding and masonry styles. Extensive reserves are readily available.
The impressive list of reference sites for Locharbriggs red sandstone dates back to the 1700s and includes sites across Scotland and England as well as landmark buildings in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
PROJECT SUMMARY:
This purpose built headquarters on the Royal Showground, Stoneleigh is now open providing a central location for members and staff. The quality of the building stone was essential to the durability of the scheme. This agriculture house has been designed and built to reflect the NFU's values, strengths and rural heritage. It is constructed using a natural red sandstone cladding on the façade; produced at Locharbriggs quarry, the largest working red sandstone quarry in Scotland.
The design of this two storey office block has been built with an integrated blend of environmental considerations, urbanized with the robust colour tones of Locharbriggs red sandstone.
THE BUILD SOLUTION:
The ingenuity of natural sandstone product and clever design delivered a handset project, built with a mix of two sizes of Locharbriggs red sandstone ashlar walling worked to 100 x 142mm (h) and 100 x 292mm (h) to produce a bespoke finish.
SMC Corstorphine & Wright won the Warwick District Council Rural Design Award in the new build category. The Rural Design Awards are held every three years, focus on the enhancement of the natural environment which contributes positively to the local area and enhances the enjoyment of people visiting the area as well as residents.
