NATURAL STONE CASE STUDY - MERCURE ST PAULS HOTEL AND SPA - SHEFFIELD
STONE DESCRIPTION:
Stoke Hall buff sandstone is fine to medium grained and constant in colour. This versatile sandstone has been continually extracted from the Stoke Hall Quarry at Grindleford, Derbyshire since 1835.
Its durability and consistent colour makes Stoke Hall buff sandstone a popular choice for a wide range of building types and styles across the UK. With extensive reserves readily available, Stoke Hall sandstone is perfect for all sizes of projects, from major commercial builds to residential developments. Significant project records for Stoke Hall include commercial and civic buildings, some dating back to the early 1900s.
PROJECT SUMMARY:
Sheffield has a unique combination of assets, from its location and environment, to its heritage and innovation. The philosophy behind the design of this prestige's Mercure hotel was to reflect the synthesis between the two contrasting structures, which adjoin the hotel on either side, the iconic Peace Gardens and the Grade 1 Listed Town Hall.
THE BUILD SOLUTION:
Blending seamlessly into its environment, the Mercure hotel is clad on three elevations using Stoke Hall buff sandstone – the same sandstone from Stoke Hall quarry that was used to build Sheffield Town Hall in 1886 and in contrast the later Peace Gardens, developed in 1998.
Using a light weight cladding system: natural sandstone thin panels were adhered to a lightweight aluminium honeycomb backing. Providing the design with extreme panel flatness combined with "crisp" edges giving the contemporary element required for the build.
