Natural Stone Case Study-Fettes College-Edinburgh

STONE DESCRIPTION:

This fine to medium grained sandstone is extracted from Dale View Quarry, Stanton-by-Dale, Derbyshire is now specified in Scotland on a regular basis and used widely across the UK for all scale of projects – from major prestigious city centre schemes to residential developments and private homes.

The striking colour of Stanton Moor buff sandstone features a buff base with brown, gold and wild pink variation, adding depth and interest to both traditional and contemporary building designs. Extensive reserves allow selection from either Buff of Pink colour options.

PROJECT SUMMARY:

Designed over four storeys this new students’ residence needed to contain 100 en-suite study bedrooms and communal facilities at ground level.

A linked pair of curved blocks, focused on a vescis-shaped communal core. The accommodation is accessed from a central space with a linked bridge allowing access to either block.

THE BUILD SOLUTION:

Constructed by traditional handset methods using bespoke Ashlar walling and masonry products the two wings are arranged to frame the main tower when seen obliquely from East Fettes Avenue. The contemporary design required the natural stone colour variation of Stanton Moor buff - pink sandstone to be resilient over the four storey build.
