NATURAL STONE CASE STUDY - MEDIA CENTRE - BARNSLEY

Natural Stone Case Study-Digital Media Centre-Barnsley

STONE DESCRIPTION:

Stoke Hall buff sandstone is fine to medium grained and constant in colour. This versatile sandstone has been continually extracted from the Stoke Hall Quarry at Grindleford, Derbyshire since 1835.

The durability and consistent buff colour makes Stoke Hall buff sandstone a popular choice for a wide range of building types and styles across the UK. With extensive reserves readily available, Stoke Hall sandstone is perfect for all sizes of projects, from major commercial builds to residential developments.

PROJECT SUMMARY:

To construct a unique, award-winning, six-story landmark office building in the centre of Barnsley as part of the "Remaking Barnsley Renaissance Programme".

THE BUILD SOLUTION:

The iconic Digital Media Centre (DMC) provides state of the art accommodation designed to support the success and development of creative, media and digital business into the local economy. The building is constructed on the upper part of the former courthouse and station with three architectural blocks connected by a glass atrium at its centre, housing 120 individual business units.

Stoke Hall buff sandstone was chosen as the natural material in which to create the contemporary exterior required for the build. To achieve the flat almost veneer like finish, natural stone thin cladding panels were applied to a lightweight honeycomb panel system before being fixed onto the building structure.

This building has become the prominent landmark on the Barnsley urban skyline. It combines dynamic design using Stoke Hall sandstone to reflect the traditional architecture of Barnsley in a very contemporary way.

A BREEAM rating of "very good" was achieved for the project.
