NATURAL STONE CASE STUDY - CATHEDRAL SONG SCHOOL - CHESTER
STONE DESCRIPTION:
A Permian Sandstone from the Locharbriggs Quarry in Dumfries, Scotland, one of the oldest and largest and actively worked red sandstone quarries in Scotland.
Quarried since the 18th century, this pink to red medium grained sandstone is widely used across Scotland and England for walling and traditional and contemporary cladding and masonry styles.
The impressive list of reference sites for Locharbriggs Red Sandstone dates back to the 1700s and includes sites across Scotland and England as well as landmark buildings in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
PROJECT SUMMARY:
The highly visible profile of the "Song School" required technical excellence, and the correct selection of red sandstone to blend this project sympathetic into the Cathedral grounds.
The refinement in the detailing of the new stonework makes this a very impressive addition to the Cathedral. The new rose window is a particularly good example of contemporary stone cutting.
THE BUILD SOLUTION:
The renowned Locharbriggs red sandstone provided the project with a match to the indigenous stones of Chester creating an empathy with the historic setting of the adjacent Cathedral whilst presenting Arrol & Snell Ltd, the Architectural Design team, with a material capable of being worked to a high degree of precision, with fine jointing for the walling elements. The stones were grouted in place to give the monolithic appearance desired by the designers.
