Stancliffe Stone Were Pleased To Support The Scottish Stonemasonry Competition Publish Date: 16/12/2010

The Skills Competition 2010 was held over the freezing snowy weekend of the 27th – 28th November at Historic Scotland’s Central Depot in Stirling.

The competition, which is sponsored by Historic Scotland and supported by the Scottish Stone Liaison Group, in partnership with ConstructionSkills, demonstrates the wealth of talent that exists among stonemasonry apprentices in Scotland.

With the challenge set, and the bar been raised - three teams of two trainee masons from the Scottish stonemasonry training centres of:

- City of Glasgow College
- Edinburgh’s Telford College
- Historic Scotland stonemasonry training unit in Elgin
Competed against each other for 1st place.

Stancliffe Stone supplied the premier quality dimensional buff sandstone ashlar blocks cut to a specific set of requirements – specification guidelines set by ConstructionSkills for the competition.

Competitors competed against the clock to dress and build the buff sandstone ashlar blocks into a specifically designed stone pillar, standing 1095 mm high x 605 mm at the base, within the allotted -16 hour timeframe. The end result was judged on both building and dressing skills with the winners from City of Glasgow College taking this years title.

"It is important that we continue to train the natural stone craftsmen of the future and the high standard of this competition demonstrates that we have some very talented individuals entering the industry." Richard Groom – Heritage Training Adviser, Scotland.
