Specifying British Natural Stones in Scotland
Publish Date: 28/06/2010
The award winning Hotel Massoni, at the heart of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, was the venue for Stancliffe Stone's 'Specifying British Natural Stone in Scotland' event, held 24th June over an extended lunch.
A mixture of over 50 Architects and Planners, gathered for this event to hear about Stancliffe's offer of both historic building stones and more recent natural stone types that have a strong history and presence, or are a match for stones that are no longer available in Scotland.
Working in partnership with British Geological Survey (BGS) and the Scottish Liaison Group (SSLG) we launched the 'Book of Stones in Scotland' produced by Stancliffe Stone. The book illustrates Stancliffe's stone portfolio of British building stones, six of which form part of Scotland’s built heritage dating back to 1700s. These stone types range from Locharbriggs red sandstone, quarried in Dumfries, through to a Stoke Hall buff Derbyshire sandstone which has been used to clad the façade of Hotel Missoni in 2009.
We were joined by Dr. Ewan Hyslop, Director, British Geological Survey (BGS), who presented well rounded view on British building stones, and information on responsible sourcing of natural stone. He also talked about test data, durability, and discussed sustainability, history; repair and restoration.
A series of informal presentations including a RIBA approved CPD seminar on 'Specifying Natural Stone', presented by the Stancliffe management team, shared knowledge about dimensional stone and included technical information and assurance guarantee.
