RHS Spring Flower Show-Harrogate 2011
Publish Date: 19/04/2011
The design brief entitled H² Overflow, embraces the concept of the rain garden, incorporating water collection and filtration, which demonstrated rainfall management in an increasingly unpredictable and ever changing climate.
The aim of the design is to demonstrate to the visitors at the Harrogate Show how simple techniques can be easily adapted to assist them in managing the ever increasing problem of extremes of weather, in particular flood and drought, in their own gardens.
Visitors to the garden are drawn by a series of exciting vistas and eye catching features.
The site is surrounded on two sides by gabions filled with 9 tonnes of Jacksdale, buff - split face sandstone walling, a British natural sandstone product supplied by Stancliffe Stone. These natural stone gabions demonstrate how in reality a hillside would be retained whilst allowing natural drainage to occur.
The space is protected from the elements by a green roof constructed of wood semi carpeted with living cover. Rainwater is captured and then drains away to the lowest point of the structure which rests on the Jacksdale natural sandstone gabions. From this point, water soaks slowly through these natural sandstone filled gabions; via the rill’s to a boulder strew swales before reaching the lowest point of the garden.
