Princess Royal unveils memorial to soldiers killed on duty in Afghanistan Publish Date: 28/09/2011

A Memorial dedication to war heroes killed while serving in Afghanistan has been unveiled by the Princess Royal, Tuesday 27th September.

She joined soldiers from The Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland (1 Scots), at Dreghorn Barracks in Edinburgh, where she laid a wreath during a dedication ceremony.

The memorial donated by Stancliffe Stone has been commissioned to commemorate members of 1 SCOTS killed on operations.

The memorial is a modern design Celtic cross created by Stancliffe’s skilled masonry team, from a single block of Stanton Moor sandstone, weighing around 10 tonnes, the memorial has carved panels of scripts and regiment badges.

Major Norrie McKinnon, the battalion’s spokesmen said, ‘the memorial will serve as a lasting memory to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice’
