Locharbriggs Quarry Open Day

Locharbriggs Quarry Open Day Publish Date: 05/11/2010

Stancliffe Stone has a portfolio of British building stones, some of which form part of Scotland’s built heritage as well as providing indigenous stones for new build projects.

Locharbriggs quarry, close to Dumfries is the oldest, largest and one of the very few working red sandstone quarries in Scotland. Quarry and project records date back to the 1700s and the quarry has been worked continuously since the 1890s.

Natural Sandstone provides our architectural heritage, particularly when you look at the Victorian and Edwardian commercial buildings, sandstone tenements, terraces, villas and other vernacular styles within Edinburgh and Glasgow’s city centres. These are characteristics contribute to a communities identity and unique sense of place.

New building projects and designs, however, should also seek to complement or, where appropriate, re-interpret traditional building methods or apply new building forms which respect the appropriate stones types already used within our towns, cities and village locations. Sourcing that stone is part of the design and specification stage to all natural stone building projects.

Throughout the year Stancliffe run a series of visits to our quarries and processing works aimed at providing architects, specifies, contractors and planners with first hand information on the intelligent use of dimensional stone in the built environment.

The recent open day at Locharbriggs quarry provided an informative insight into today’s dimensional stone business including quarrying management, masonry processing, and the design opportunity using natural stone.

We also shared our knowledge by presenting a RIBA approved CPD on ‘Specifying Natural Stone’ and invited David Richardson, Director of the Building Technology Group at BRE as guest speaker to provided an expert opinion the use of indigenous building stones in Scotland and throughout the UK.
If you missed out on this event we would be delighted to share our knowledge of dimensional stone with you. To book one of our Natural Stone CPD Training Courses at your office, apply online, or call 01629 653000 to order your copy of The Book of Stone in Scotland.
